Top Ten Most Common HSPT Questions

In the Cincinnati area, the High School Placement Test (HSPT) is a critical step for 8th graders applying to Catholic high schools. Administered under the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, the test serves as a tool for admissions, scholarship eligibility, and freshman course placement.

  1. When and Where is the HSPT given?
In Cincinnati, the test is typically held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. For the 2025–2026 school year, the primary test date was Saturday, November 22, 2025.
Students can test at any Archdiocesan high school they are eligible to attend (e.g., girls can test at all-female or co-ed schools). Most parents choose the school that is their child's first choice.

  2. How do I register and what is the cost?
Registration is handled online through the Scholastic Testing Service (STS) portal and usually opens in August. The fee is approximately $30.

  3. How many schools can receive the scores?
During registration, you can designate up to three high schools within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to receive your child's results at no extra cost.

  4. What if my child needs testing accommodations?
Schools provide accommodations (like extra time) for students with a documented IEP, 504, or ISP. You must submit the Archdiocese Accommodation Form and supporting records to the testing site, usually by early November.

  5. Are calculators allowed?
No. Calculators are strictly prohibited on the HSPT. All math and quantitative sections must be completed without one.

  6. What is a "good" score?
Scores range from 200 to 800. While each school has different standards, a national percentile of 75th or higher is generally considered strong for scholarships and honors placement.

  7. Can my child retake the test?
Generally, no. The Archdiocese typically allows only one attempt per year. If a student is sick on the main date, make-up dates are often offered in early December.

  8. What subjects are covered?
The test consists of five sections: Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language. It is a fast-paced, multiple-choice exam with 298 questions.

  9. When are results released?
For the November test, results are typically sent directly to parents via email or mail in mid-January.
